Ready to learn the foundations of sewing in a relaxed, welcoming setting? Join us for this hands-on Basic Sewing Class with Carmel, designed to give you the core skills and knowledge you need to start sewing with confidence.

In this beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll learn the essentials that every sewist should know—from understanding your machine to mastering simple hand stitches and getting familiar with fabrics, tools, and patterns. Whether you’re brand new or just need a refresher, this class will help you build a strong, practical foundation for future projects.

What you’ll learn:

  • Machine Basics: How to thread a machine, wind a bobbin, adjust stitch length, and understand common stitch types
  • Basic Hand Stitches: Running stitch, back stitch, and slip stitch for mending and finishing, plus how to sew on a button
  • Pattern Reading: How to understand pattern markings, grainlines, and basic instructions
  • Fabric & Thread: An introduction to different fabric types and how to choose the right thread to match
  • Essential Tools: A look at the basic tools every beginner needs for their sewing journey

Participants are welcome to bring their own sewing machine if they’d like to learn the specifics of using it, but it’s not required. Carmel will provide hand sewing needles, fabric, buttons, scissors, and examples of the basic tools discussed during class.

This is a great starting point for anyone interested in mending, simple projects, or building a lifelong sewing skill. Come ready to learn, ask questions, and enjoy the creative process!

Instructor Bio:

Hi, I’m Carmel Mitchell! Sewing has been my passion since I was 8 years old, when my grandmother first taught me how to stitch. What started as a hobby quickly grew into a lifelong dedication to mastering the art of sewing and quilting.
For the past 15 years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching sewing to students of all skill levels. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing my students gain confidence and express their creativity through their projects. Some of my proudest moments have been watching several of my students win ribbons for their sewing projects at the state fair - it’s a testament to their hard work and the beauty of this timeless craft.
As a master quilter, I love sharing my knowledge and helping others discover the joy of creating something meaningful with their own hands. Whether you’re brand new to sewing or looking to refine your skills, I’m here to guide and inspire you every step of the way.
